William Henry MANDER
Exhibited 1882 – 1914
William Henry Mander was a landscape painter, who was based in Birmingham, and painted mainly scenes in Wales and Warwickshire in a similar style to that of Benjamin Williams Leader.
Mander was so taken with North Wales that he moved from the Midlands to Dollgelau in 1899 where he lived for five years before moving to Lincoln. Shortly after he moved to Sheffield before returning to his native Birmingham in 1907
Mander has a particularly attractive, naturalistic style. His palette is rich but always through the spectrum of natures colours using yellows, greens and browns.
His paintings are similar in style and subject, but they are all innovative which sets him apart from his contemporaries like David Bates and Benjamin W. Leader.
Between 1881 and 1914 he regularly exhibited his work especially at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham. Titles included Scene near Trefriw, North Wales (1898) and Stepping Stones in the Conway (1899).
